Toy maltipoo vs mini: sizes, parents and teacup risks
Igor, founder of ZoozyJars and maltipoo owner · Updated October 26, 2026 · 5 min read
In the toy maltipoo vs mini question, the difference comes from the poodle parent: a toy maltipoo has a toy poodle parent and weighs 2.3–4.5 kg as an adult, while a mini has a miniature poodle parent and weighs 4.5–9 kg. "Teacup" is a marketing name for dogs under 2.3 kg, not a variety.
None of these categories is official. The maltipoo has no breed standard, so the specific parents decide its size, not the word in the advert.
- Toy: 2.3–4.5 kg, 20–25 cm at the shoulder, parent: toy poodle.
- Mini: 4.5–9 kg, 28–35 cm, parent: miniature poodle.
- Teacup: under 2.3 kg. A marketing label with the highest risk of hypoglycaemia and injury.
- Best predictor: the type of poodle and the actual weight of both parents.
Toy maltipoo vs mini vs teacup: what the labels mean
Breeders invented the toy, mini and teacup categories, not kennel clubs. The FCI, the AKC and The Kennel Club don't register maltipoos, so nobody checks whether a "toy" in an advert will actually stay small.
| Label in the advert | Adult weight | Height at the shoulder | Poodle parent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Teacup | under 2.3 kg | under 20 cm | the smallest toy poodle |
| Toy | 2.3–4.5 kg | 20–25 cm | toy poodle |
| Mini | 4.5–9 kg | 28–35 cm | miniature poodle |
You may also see "medium". There is no shared definition for it. It usually means a dog heavier than a typical mini, which is rare, because the Maltese on the other side is very small.
How weight grows month by month and when a maltipoo stops growing is covered in how big a full-grown maltipoo gets. This page is about something else: how to tell the category before you buy a puppy.
Toy or miniature poodle: the parent sets the size
The Maltese is always small. Under the American standard it weighs under 3.2 kg, ideally 1.8–2.7 kg. So most of the size range in maltipoos comes from the poodle.
- Toy poodle: according to the AKC, up to 25 cm at the shoulder and about 1.8–2.7 kg. Usually gives a toy maltipoo.
- Miniature poodle: 25–38 cm and about 4.5–6.8 kg. Usually gives a mini maltipoo.
The parent's size is the simplest clue, not a guarantee. Puppies from one litter can differ a lot, especially in the F2 generation, where traits from both sides mix the most. What the letters in an advert mean is explained in F1, F1b and F2 maltipoo.
How to predict a puppy's size from the parents
Before you pay a deposit, ask the breeder five questions:
- What kind of poodle: toy or miniature? "Small" tells you nothing.
- How much do both parents weigh? Ask for a number in kilograms, not a description.
- Can I see the mother in person? If not, treat it as a warning sign.
- Which generation is it: F1, F1b, F2 or multigen? Multigen gives the most predictable size.
- How much do adult dogs from this pair's earlier litters weigh?
When I bought Zuzi, this was what mattered most to me: who the parents are, how they look and what level the dogs are. Her mother is a friend's own dog, not one from a mass breeder, so I saw the adult dog before I saw the puppy. Zuzi is 6 now and weighs 4–4.3 kg, a typical toy.
Once the puppy is home, a simple rule helps: weigh it at 16 weeks and double the result. You get an approximate adult weight, not an exact figure.
Why "teacup" is marketing and a bigger risk
Teacup sounds like a separate, more expensive variety. In practice it's a name for the smallest dogs, under 2.3 kg, with no standard behind it. "Teacup" used as a selling point sits on the list of warning signs next to puppies that are always available and handovers in a car park.
The problem is health. Very small puppies have few energy reserves, so their blood sugar can drop between meals. The tiniest dogs also get hurt more easily: a jump off the sofa or a fall from a child's arms that a mini usually survives can be dangerous for a 2 kg dog.
If a maltipoo puppy is floppy, trembling, wobbly or hasn't eaten for more than ten hours, go to the vet straight away. With small puppies, don't wait until tomorrow.
What size changes day to day
The difference between 3 and 7 kg is not just looks. It affects a few practical things:
- Food. A 3 kg neutered dog needs about 160 kcal a day, a 7 kg dog about 300 kcal. For a 4 kg dog, every extra kilogram is 25% more body weight.
- Knees and windpipe. Kneecaps and tracheal collapse are weak points of small dogs. A harness instead of a collar and steps by the sofa reduce the strain.
- Cold. A maltipoo has no undercoat, so in winter it needs a coat and shorter walks.
- Children. If small children might pick the dog up and drop it, a mini is the safer choice.
The rest of the questions for the breeder, including the parents' health tests, are in 12 questions to ask a maltipoo breeder. Everything else about this cross is in the maltipoo guide.
