Full-grown maltipoo: weight and when it stops growing

Igor, founder of ZoozyJars and maltipoo owner · Updated October 13, 2026 · 5 min read

A full grown maltipoo usually weighs 2.3–4.5 kg (5–10 lb) as a toy and 4.5–9 kg (10–20 lb) as a mini, standing 20–35 cm (8–14 in) at the shoulder. Height stops at 8–10 months, but a mini can keep gaining weight until 14 months.

The parents' weight tells you most about future size, not the label in a listing.

    • Toy: 2.3–4.5 kg, 20–25 cm. Parent: toy poodle.
    • Mini: 4.5–9 kg, 28–35 cm. Parent: miniature poodle.
    • Growth ends: 8–10 months, mini weight until 12–14 months.
    • Simple rule: weight at 16 weeks × 2 ≈ adult weight.

How much a full-grown maltipoo weighs: toy, mini and teacup

The maltipoo has no breed standard, so toy, mini and teacup aren't official categories. Breeders and owners use them widely, though.

Size Adult weight Height at shoulder Poodle parent Notes
Teacup under 2.3 kg under 20 cm smallest toy marketing label, highest risk of low blood sugar and injury
Toy 2.3–4.5 kg 20–25 cm toy poodle a good choice for a flat
Mini 4.5–9 kg 28–35 cm miniature poodle can gain weight until 12–14 months

My adult maltipoo weighs 4–4.3 kg, depending on whether she's put on a little. That's a typical toy size.

    When do maltipoos stop growing?

Height usually stops at 8–10 months. A toy maltipoo reaches adult weight at around 8–9 months. A mini grows longer and can gain weight until 12–14 months.

At about 4 months a puppy weighs roughly half its adult weight. Hence the simple rule: weigh your puppy at 16 weeks and double the number. It's a guide, not an exact figure.

How to predict a puppy's weight before you buy

    • Ask whether the poodle was a toy or a miniature.
    • Ask for both parents' actual weight, not "small".
    • Meet the mother in person.

Puppies in the same litter can differ noticeably, especially in F2 and multigen generations. More questions are in 12 questions to ask a maltipoo breeder.

Toy or mini: which to choose

A toy fits in any flat and is easy to take to a café or on a plane. The tiniest dogs are more fragile, though: injuries after jumping off the sofa are more likely, and puppies have smaller energy reserves between meals.

A mini copes better with children's play and longer walks. It's still a small dog, but a fall from a child's arms is less dangerous for it than for a 2.5 kg dog.

If you have young children who might pick the dog up and drop it, a mini is the safer choice. If you travel a lot and the dog will come with you, a toy is more practical.

    Full-grown maltipoos and food

Small dogs gain weight fast, and every extra kilogram on a 4 kg dog is 25% more body mass. The joints and kneecaps carry all of it, and kneecaps are a weak spot in small breeds.

A 4 kg neutered adult maltipoo needs about 200 kcal a day. The chart for 2–10 kg dogs and the conversion to grams are in how much to feed a dog.

How to check your maltipoo's weight is right

A fluffy maltipoo coat easily fools the eye, so check with your hand:

    • you can feel the ribs without pressing,
    • from above you can see a waist behind the ribs,
    • weight stays the same for 2–4 weeks.

If a puppy grows poorly or seems dull after meals, or an adult dog loses weight without a change in diet, see your vet.

    Frequently asked questions

A toy usually 2.3–4.5 kg (5–10 lb), a mini 4.5–9 kg (10–20 lb). The best guide is the real weight of both parents and the poodle's size.
