How many times a day to feed a dog and a puppy: chart

How many times a day to feed a dog? Adults twice, puppies under 4 months four times, and from 4 to 6 months three times. Don't move small dogs to one meal a day, because they have small energy reserves.

Fixed mealtimes and a correctly calculated daily portion matter more than the number of meals.

    • Puppy under 4 months: 4 meals.
    • 4–6 months: 3 meals.
    • From 6 months: 2–3 meals.
    • Adult and senior: 2 meals at fixed times.
    • You split the daily portion across meals, you don't give it at every meal.

How many times a day to feed a puppy

Puppies grow fastest in the first months. At around 4 months, small dogs weigh roughly half their adult weight. The stomach is small and the needs are high, so they need more meals.

Age Meals a day Example times
    under 4 months 4 7:00, 11:00, 15:00, 19:00
    4–6 months 3 7:00, 13:00, 19:00
    from 6 months 2–3 7:30, (13:00), 18:30
    adult and senior 2 7:30, 18:30

The smallest toy-breed puppies shouldn't go long between meals. They have little in reserve, and their blood sugar can drop.

A puppy that is floppy, trembling, wobbly or misses several meals in a row needs a vet the same day. With tiny puppies, don't wait until tomorrow.

How many times a day to feed an adult dog

For most adult dogs, 2 meals work well: morning and evening. The dog isn't hungry for long, and you can easily control the portion.

My maltipoo has her first meal in the morning, as soon as I sit down at the table, and her second at about 5 pm.

You split the daily portion in half. If your dog needs 200 kcal a day, it gets about 100 kcal twice, not 200 twice. Work out your dog's calories in how much to feed a dog.

Can you feed a dog once a day?

In 2022 the Dog Aging Project reported on more than 24,000 dogs. Owners of dogs fed once a day reported some diseases less often. But this is an observational study: it shows an association and doesn't prove that one meal is healthier.

For a small dog, one big meal means a long gap and a higher risk of low blood sugar. So for dogs under 10 kg, puppies and seniors, stay with 2 meals unless your vet says otherwise.

    Fixed times build appetite

A dog that eats at the same time every day starts looking forward to its meal. It's the simplest fix for a picky eater. If your dog hasn't eaten within 15 minutes, put the bowl in the fridge and serve it at the next meal, warmed to room temperature.

Seniors: more attention, same number of meals

A dog over 8 usually still eats twice a day. It is pickier, though, and gains weight more easily because it moves less. Weigh it every 2–4 weeks and adjust the portion by about 10% before you change the number of meals.

    Frequently asked questions

A large healthy dog sometimes, yes. A small dog or a puppy, better not, because they have small energy reserves. For dogs under 10 kg, stick to 2 meals.
