Can dogs eat watermelon? How much and how to serve it

Can dogs eat watermelon? Yes, the flesh without seeds or rind, in small amounts. Watermelon is over 90% water, so it makes a cool summer treat, but it doesn't replace a meal.
- Yes: red flesh, cut into cubes.
- No: rind and seeds, which can block a small dog's intestines.
- How much: up to 25 g a day for a 3 kg dog, 40 g for 5 kg, 55 g for 8 kg.
- Watch out: too much at once is a common cause of diarrhoea.
Vomiting, no poop, or a hard or painful belly after eating rind or lots of seeds is a reason to see a vet urgently.
How much watermelon can a dog eat
Treats, fruit included, shouldn't go over 10% of your dog's daily calories. Let fruit take half of that at most, since your dog gets other rewards during the day too.

We calculated this for a neutered adult dog: 70 × weight^0.75 kcal a day, with watermelon at about 30 kcal per 100 g. My maltipoo weighs about 4 kg, so for her that's 4–5 small cubes. She has had watermelon: we give her small pieces with the seeds taken out.
Seeds and rind: what to watch for
The flesh isn't dangerous. The problem is the parts a dog swallows without chewing:
- Rind. Tough and fibrous, and small dogs swallow it in chunks. It can upset the stomach or block the intestines.
- Black seeds. A few usually pass. A handful in a 3–4 kg dog is a blockage risk.
- Soft white seeds in "seedless" watermelons are fine.
The easiest way: cut the watermelon into cubes, pick out the black seeds, then give it to your dog.
When watermelon causes problems
A big portion means lots of water and sugar at once. The result is loose poop, more frequent peeing and sometimes gas. If your dog is diabetic or overweight, agree on fruit with your vet.
Don't give your dog watermelon with sugar, in a fruit salad with other ingredients, or in ice cream and sorbet. The same fruit in a human dessert is a different product.
How to serve watermelon in summer
- Cubes straight from the fridge as a reward after a walk.
- Frozen cubes of flesh to chew on hot days. For a small dog, no bigger than 2 cm.
- A few pieces on a snuffle mat instead of a regular treat.
Watermelon won't hydrate your dog instead of water. A bowl of fresh water matters more in summer than any fruit.
Fruit is an extra, not a meal
