Can dogs eat grapes? No. What to do if yours did
Igor, founder of ZoozyJars and maltipoo owner · Updated October 14, 2026 · 4 min read
Can dogs eat grapes? No. Grapes and raisins can damage a dog's kidneys, and nobody knows from what dose. If your dog has eaten even a few, call your vet before symptoms appear.
- Answer: no, in any amount.
- Same goes for: raisins, grape juice, cakes and mixes with raisins.
- Your dog ate some? Call your vet right away, don't wait for symptoms.
- Don't make your dog vomit yourself unless a vet tells you to.
Has your dog eaten grapes or raisins? Call your vet now. Tell them your dog's weight, how much it ate (even roughly) and when. The sooner the vet acts, the better the chance the kidneys aren't damaged.
Why grapes are dangerous for dogs
For years nobody knew what in grapes harms dogs. In 2021, specialists at the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center named tartaric acid, which grapes contain in large amounts, as the likely cause. This explains why different fruit and different dogs react differently.
The practical conclusion stays the same: there is no safe dose. One dog eats a handful and is fine, another ends up in hospital with acute kidney failure after a few grapes. Small dogs are more at risk, because the same amount is spread over 3–4 kg of body weight.
My dog ate a grape: what to do step by step
- Take away the rest of the grapes and check how many might be missing.
- Call your vet or a 24-hour clinic. Give your dog's weight, the amount and the time.
- Don't give salt, hydrogen peroxide or other home remedies to cause vomiting.
- If the vet tells you to come in, go. They usually make the dog vomit safely and may start a drip and kidney tests.
Time matters. Vomiting induced by a vet within 1–2 hours of eating removes most of the fruit from the stomach.
Symptoms of grape poisoning
- vomiting, often within a few hours;
- diarrhoea, no appetite;
- lethargy, weakness;
- belly pain;
- after 24–72 hours: peeing less or not at all, bad breath.
No symptoms in the first hours doesn't mean nothing happened.
Where raisins hide
Raisins are more dangerous than fresh grapes because they're small and concentrated. Dogs most often eat them in:
- buns, cheesecake, fruit cake and poppy seed cake;
- trail mix and dried fruit mixes;
- muesli and cereal bars;
- couscous and salads with raisins.
My maltipoo weighs about 4 kg, and everyone at home knows grapes are off the menu for her.
Safe fruit instead of grapes
If you want to give your dog something sweet, strawberries, blueberries or seedless watermelon in small amounts are better choices. The full chart of fruit and foods is in what dogs can't eat.
Frequently asked questions
Nobody knows. Some dogs developed kidney problems after a few grapes, others ate more with no signs. You can't predict how your dog will react, so any amount is a reason to call your vet.
